Things that you need to know about Obesity, Body Image & Self Perception.

Obesity is when excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life and/or increased health problems. Obesity is a growing problem, not only in the United States but world wide.

Children are more likely to be overweight as a result of their parents' and relatives' poor health habits and possible genetic link to being overweight. Parents need to monitor what their children eat and how much physical activity they engage in everyday. In addition to monitoring these behaviors, parents also need to lead by example and do these things for themselves.

As a physical education (PE) teacher, I feel it is important to change the growing trend of obesity in children. We need to teach children about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating habits, but we also need to teach their parents how to incorporate these things at home. Although we can do a lot at school to address these issues, the parents have a responsibility too. We need to have them on board to make real changes in the lives of children.

As educators we play a vital role in teaching children how to feel the best about themselves and encourage healthy habits that will sustain a positive self-perception. Without that positive self-perception, children will suffer not only physically, but socially and academically as well.
